Vision · Anticipate

Desired & Undesired Future State

Two paired statements: the desired 5-year future and the undesired one the design must prevent.

Why it matters

Anchors the product to a future worth building, and names the failure to avoid.

When to use it

To set the target the whole design works toward.

How to run it

  1. Describe where the user should be in 5 years if the product succeeds.

  2. Describe the undesired state the design must actively prevent.

  3. Keep both concrete and user-centred.

  4. Use them as the anchor for backcasting.

Watch out for

A vision so vague you can't tell whether you're moving toward it.
